A trip to the Singhalila National Park, due to travel time, should at least be 8 nights and 9 days so that it allows students to explore these activities curated for this module comfortably, with clear learning outcomes.

The red panda (Ailurus fulgens), also called lesser panda or red bear-cat, is a small arboreal mammal native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China that has been classified as endangered by the IUCN as its wild population is estimated at less than 10,000 mature individuals. This adorable little animal is heading towards extinction, threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and inbreeding depression, although red pandas are protected by national laws in their range countries, they continue to suffer as these laws are not enforced effectively. Trekking trails onwards from Garibas range of the park, offers students a chance to learn about this amazing species. 

Trekking is the best way to explore this magnificent park, which is a birder’s paradise with over 300 species of birds to discover, from Blood Pheasants, Satyr Tragopan, Kalij Pheasant, Brown and Fulvous Parrotbills, Rufous-vented Tit, to Old World babblers like the Fire-tailed Myzornis and the Golden-breasted Fulvetta, Rosefinches and many more.

The park’s beautiful landscape dotted with flowering rhododendrons, giant magnolias, spruce and wide range of amazing exotic orchids will enchant students. There are over 600 varieties of orchids in this area, the largest concentration in any single geographical area in the world. Outdoor skills, nature exploration and alpine ecology will be explored through this activity.

One of the best places to see sunrise and sunsets, Sandakhphu is the highest peak in West Bengal and offers the best views of Kangchenjunga also known as “Sleeping Buddha” or Sleeping Shiva”. Sandakphu has a small village on the peak with few basic accommodation facilities. Four of the five highest peaks in the world can be seen from Sandakphu which are Mount Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu. Mountain climbing in these region will help students to test their physical prowess and also develop necessary outdoor skills.
